Background

Merbau (also known as Kwila) is a hardwood sourced from managed forests in Indonesia.  This timber is regarded as one of the most durable in the world and ideally suited to the harsh extremes of the Australian climate.

Maintenance

Assembly

Assembled items will need to be checked after their settling in period and tightened up with an allen key.  Further tightening may be necessary at a later stage – which is quite normal for any kit form product.  Failure to keep your furniture assembled tightly may result in excessive movement and stress being placed on joins.

Oiling

Left to weather, Kwila will take on a fence post grey colour.  If you prefer the new look, regular oiling with a decking oil is recommended.  This may need to be done every 12 months – but will vary considerably depending on where the furniture is located and to what it is exposed.

Fabric Care

Acrylic covers should be hosed down regularly to remove dust and dirt.  Stubborn soiling may be removed by soaking for 20 minutes in a solution of 1 part bleach to 4 parts of luke warm water.  Rinse thoroughly with cold water and hang out to dry.  Avoid spin drying or wringing as this may put a permanent crease in the fabric.

Bleeding

During the initial weathering of Kwila, a dark red/brown sap leeches out during wet and damp conditions.  This sap will stain concrete or tiled areas.

The bleeding process may be hastened by placing the furniture on a grassed area and hosing down thoroughly several times.  The leeching period is unpredictable but will gradually lessen.  Any sap stains will eventually fade over a period of time.

Remove canvas covers prior to bleeding to avoid permanent staining.
